Ehhhh... yeah I know, I didn´t see this one coming, but in this case it doesn´t matter, the CD-ROM is dead anyway and I don´t need it, it´s hooked up to the Airport network so I can access data from another Macs CD-ROM if I need to. As I´m writing this I´m installing Tiger on it from a Powerbook 12-inch via Target disk mode. I´m sure someone noticed that it was running Panther and wondered why on earth I would want that on a cool Mac like this :-)
